Florence, Alabama - September 2006

The hotel where I stayed and
the building where I worked

Florence is next to the Tennessee River,
so I decided to visit parks near the river.

McFarland Park

The marina is near the bridge across the river.
The tower stands at the entrance to the marina.

Boats in the marina

Two men were putting their boat onto a trailer.  One man was driving the truck and one was driving the boat.
Then they threw some large fish into the water.  I guess they made their picture before throwing them back.

Across the river are houses on top of bluffs.

Veterans Memorial Park

I went to Veterans Memorial Park because it was near Wilson Dam and I wanted to see the dam.

I saw lots of kids playing various sports, viewed the
memorial, and followed a disc golf course a short way.

I made a nice picture of the river with some barges on it.  Still no dam.

Wilson Dam

Still looking for the dam, I got back on the road and drove across the river.
The road seemed narrow, and suddenly I realized I was driving on top of the dam!

The road headed straight for this building and finally curved and went around the building.
Then I saw all this huge electrical equipment.  I walked along a path toward the river, and there it was - Wilson Dam!
It was built by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and inspired the creation of the TVA, which now runs it.
